Teeth Whitening in St. Paul, MN
A bright, white smile projects the image of health. While having stained teeth does not mean that you don’t have excellent oral health, a white smile can dress up your appearance significantly. Your smile, in fact, can give you your most powerful accessory because your smile is often the first thing people notice about you!
Why Teeth Collect Stains
Teeth begin to darken as we age. It does not mean that you don’t brush or floss properly; it can be simply a part of life or because of certain lifestyle habits.
The enamel on your teeth, while it appears smooth, actually contains microscopic pores. As you drink coffee or red wine, use tobacco, or eat certain foods, your teeth collect stains that can build up over time. Dental cleanings and regular home care can minimize the effects of aging on our teeth, but restoring them to a youthful white appearance may require more targeted treatment.
Professional Custom Teeth Whitening
At Highgrove Dental Care, we offer a custom professional teeth whitening system that can improve and maintain the shade of your teeth.
We will start by taking and recording a before shade of your teeth so we can monitor your progress as you whiten your teeth at home.
Next, we will take impressions of your teeth to create your personal whitening trays. Your trays will fit your teeth perfectly and hold the whitening gel that will bleach your teeth. You will place a small drop of gel in each tooth receptacle of your trays and wear them for a couple of hours or more at a time.
You can repeat this process multiple times over the course of a couple of weeks until you reach your desired shade. We will take a follow-up shade to measure your results.
You can keep your whitening trays for touch-ups in the future.
Side Effects from Professional Whitening
Most patients whiten their teeth with few or no side effects. Some patients, however, may experience gum soreness or teeth sensitivity during the whitening process. Here is what you can do about it:
Gum irritation – Make sure you only place a small amount of whitening gel in each tooth receptacle of your whitening trays. This minimizes the amount of gel that oozes out onto your gums.
Teeth sensitivity – Whitening too frequently, or for too many hours at a time can cause your teeth to feel sensitive. Try cutting back on the amount of time you leave in your whitening trays and leaving a day or two in between treatments. Some patients who have recession or particularly sensitive teeth can benefit from desensitizing gels or sensitivity toothpaste.
If you still experience side effects, contact our Saint Paul, MN dental office and we can help find a solution that will give you a white smile, comfortably.
