What is the black line at the gum line above my crown?

a woman points to her smile | dental crowns st. paul mn Having any discoloration around your gums can be scary and knowing what it is that is creating this is the first step in treating your problem. Fortunately, a thin black line around your crown is no reason for concern.

Metal Crowns

You most likely have a porcelain fused to metal crown which has tooth-colored porcelain baked on to a metal substructure.  What you see is the line of metal below the porcelain after your gums receded slightly.  New technology allows the fabrication of all ceramic crowns without metal.  So, there is no dark line even if your gum tissue recedes.

If you've got questions about porcelain dental crowns please give us a call today! We know that it is important to maintain your oral health, that is why our staff here at Highgrove Dental Care are happy to answer any and all questions you may have.
