Study Finds Evidence for an Association between Gum Disease and Obesity

If you pay attention to the news lately, you have probably heard a number of reports about the serious systemic risks of having periodontal disease. Research links more and more conditions with chronic inflammation of the gums.

More information is needed to determine the cause and effect relationship between periodontal disease and overall health, but one thing we know for sure is that the health of your mouth plays a significant role in overall wellness from more than just a dental standpoint.

Periodontal Disease and Obesity

A recent study finds an association between gum disease and obesity as well as a link to insulin resistance. Overall, the study determines that obese patients suffer from gum disease at a much higher rate than their thin counterparts.

Periodontal disease is characterized by inflamed, red, and bleeding gums. More than 50% of adults in the United States suffer from some level of gum disease.

What Can You Do About It?

The first step to avoid or control gum disease is to make sure you are taking all of the necessary steps at home to protect your oral health. That means brushing and flossing as recommended – consistently and without skipping days. Bacteria breed fast and missing even a few daily brushing or flossing sessions can irritate delicate gum tissue.

The next step is to make sure you are getting the professional dental care you need to stay healthy. Brushing and flossing your teeth is simply not enough. Even if you are meticulous in your home care, plaque still collects in those hard-to-reach places like just beneath your gum line. This is when a skilled hygienist is beneficial.

Hygienists are trained to remove plaque and tartar with precision instruments that will leave your teeth feeling fresh and give your gums a chance to tighten and heal. Healthy gums should be light pink and should not hurt when you brush or floss your teeth.

Other Systemic Risks

Periodontal disease is also linked to:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Breathing problems
  • Alzheimer’s
