Common Dental Emergencies
- Broken or lost tooth – Whether you lose or break a tooth through trauma or from existing dental concerns, breaking or losing a tooth can be scary and painful. If this happens, do your best to save the tooth or fragment and see your dentist as soon as possible. If you can, put the tooth back in the socket to keep the root from dying. If the tooth is dirty, avoid rinsing it as this may remove tissue from the tooth that can help with the healing process.
- Broken or lost filling – Fillings are put in to protect the tooth from bacteria, so when a filling is broken or falls out, it can lead to serious dental problems. Make sure to save the filling if possible and make an appointment with your dental office. If we cannot save the current filling, we will at least be able to put in a temporary filling to help protect your tooth until we can see you again to put in a replacement permanent filling.
- Severe pain – Several dental issues can cause severe pain from decay to chips or fractures in the tooth. It may be difficult for you to tell what is causing the pain but it is best to see your dentist right away. If it is an issue that will take a more extensive procedure to repair, such as filings, we can at least treat the pain until your next appointment. Enduring a few hours of pain is hard enough, we don’t want you to have to wait a few days for an opening in our schedule, which is why we will make time between appointments to see you as soon as possible.
