Routine dental exams and cleanings are essential to your oral health and general wellness. During these appointments, your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and other oral structures to ensure they’re healthy and problem-free. At Highgrove Dental Care, we offer various preventive dentistry treatments, including routine preventive dental exams and cleanings in St. Paul, MN.

What to Expect at Your Next Preventive Dental Exam and Cleaning

We agree with the American Dental Association that children and adults should receive exams and cleanings every six months unless otherwise stated by your dentist. At your preventive dental exam and cleaning, you can expect the following:

  • A review of your oral and medical histories, current concerns, oral health goals, and cosmetic goals
  • A thorough visual evaluation of your mouth, neck, and jaws
  • Periodic x-rays and intraoral images
  • A comprehensive dental cleaning, polish, and fluoride treatment if needed

Our dental team uses specialized instruments to rid the teeth of plaque, tartar (hardened plaque), and bacteria. We use prophy paste to scrub away these substances while polishing the teeth gently. We also floss between teeth to remove plaque from the gumline.

We perform frequent periodontal charts and deep cleanings for patients with gingivitis or periodontal (gum) disease, also known as scaling and root planing. This type of cleaning allows us to remove plaque from below the gumline and the periodontal pockets. After the cleaning, we perform root planing to smooth the gums around the teeth; this helps seal the gums for better adherence around the teeth.

We check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancers, oral infections, TMJ or bruxism symptoms, and more at each exam. Dental x-rays help us see what’s invisible to the naked eye to stop issues before they have a chance to progress or spread. If your teeth and gums are worse for wear, your body can experience some severe consequences, including heart disease and stroke.
