If you're missing a tooth, you may be considering your options for replacement. Dental implants are a popular and long lasting solution that stand out from dentures or bridges because they replace the entire tooth, including the root. This is a crucial benefit because replacing the root helps prevent the bone loss that often occurs after losing a tooth.
At Highgrove Dental Care, we have helped over 7,500 patients in Saint Paul, Minnesota, restore their smiles with dental implants. We're here to help you understand how they work.
The Dental Implant Process
The journey to a complete smile is a well defined one. Here's what you can expect from the dental implant procedure.
- Initial Evaluation: The first step is to determine if you are a good candidate for implants. We will use x-rays and a 3-D cone beam CT scan to evaluate the density of your jawbone. This helps us ensure you have a strong, healthy foundation for the implant.
- Implant Placement: During this minor surgical procedure, the small titanium implant post is placed directly into your jawbone. We perform this procedure right here in our office using a local anesthetic to ensure you feel no pain. Most patients report minimal discomfort afterward.
- Osseointegration: This is the most critical phase of the process. Over the next three to six months, the titanium post will naturally fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This creates a secure, permanent anchor for your new tooth.
- Placing the Restoration: Once the implant has fully healed, a connector piece called an abutment is attached to the post. Finally, we will place a custom crafted dental crown, bridge, or denture on top of the abutment.
After these steps, your new implant will look, feel, and function just like a natural tooth. With proper care, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, your dental implant can last a lifetime.
