3 Common Causes of Mouth Ulcers

Mouth Ulcers | St Paul MN Dentist

Let’s face it; mouth ulcers can be a real pain. If you get them regularly, they can really decrease your enjoyment of food and make day-to-day talking and chewing painful.

While the ultimate cause of mouth ulcers is unknown, some conditions and behaviors can increase the likelihood that you will develop these painful lesions.

Acidic, Spicy, or Salty Foods

Sometimes foods can irritate the gums or the tissue inside your mouth and cheeks. Certain foods may be more likely to cause painful ulcers than others. Acidic foods or drinks, spicy foods, and overly salty foods can all take their toll on delicate tissues inside your mouth.

If you have ever developed a sore tongue after pineapple, sour candies, or fruit juice, it is a similar sensation. Give the acidic foods a break and your ulcer should resolve.

Stress and Compromised Immune System

Stress puts every part of your body at risk, including your mouth. Stress can suppress your immune system, making you more likely to develop mouth sores, periodontal disease, cold sores, and other illnesses.

Managing your schedule, your commitments, and implementing stress management techniques can benefit your overall health and well-being. It may also keep you from getting chronic mouth ulcers.

Chronic Dry Mouth

Saliva production naturally decreases as we age, but it can also diminish due to certain medications, smoking, and cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

Keeping enough saliva in your mouth will not only protect you against ulcers, it also helps to prevent decay and gum disease – two common conditions affecting your smile.

If you suffer from ulcers for more than two weeks, it is important that you have an exam to rule out any serious medical conditions.
