Why Are My Gums Itchy?

Itchy gums may sound like a unique problem to have, but if your gums ever feel itchy, you know how annoying it can be. You probably ask why your gums would possibly itch and what might have caused it. Here are some of the most common reasons that gums feel irritated and itchy.

You might have a food allergy or sensitivity you don’t know about. Sometimes allergies are mild and difficult to identify. Make a note of all of the foods that you eat and drinks you consume when you have itchy gums and see if you can find a common food that might be the culprit.

Hormonal Changes

Sometimes women going through menopause report itchy gums. We know that hormones affect periodontal health from the challenges that pregnant women experience with pregnancy gingivitis.

Gum Disease

Itchy gums might indicate irritation from bacteria. Be sure to stay on top of your home care and professional appointments to avoid this common disease.

Herpes or other Viruses

Viruses manifest symptoms in a number of ways. Herpes, in particular, can start out with an itchy patch where the outbreak will occur.

Clenching and grinding your teeth places a strain on the attachment tissue between your gums and tooth. The itchiness you feel might simply be trauma and strain on your teeth and gums. A nightguard can often resolve the issue and protect your teeth.

Dry Mouth

Certain medications and diseases may lead to dry mouth. Smoking also dries out the tissues inside the mouth and can cause discomfort, itchiness, or bad breath. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Even regular small sips can help to lubricate gum tissue.

Kids and Itchy Gums

In young children, gums may itch during the teething process. We can double-check your child’s mouth to determine if that is the cause of their discomfort.
